Description
This autograph letter, written in German by Mihály Munkácsy, one of the foremost painters of 19th-century Europe, represents a remarkable fusion of language and image. The sheet, penned in flowing ink, bears on its right side a spontaneous self-portrait sketch — a head with intense eyes, curly hair, and a bold beard, rendered in Munkácsy’s characteristically energetic hand.
The drawing acts as a visual self-commentary: Munkácsy presents himself as a reflective yet fiery artist, his expression both serious and ironic. The contrast between the fluid handwriting and the quick, charged lines of the portrait captures the duality of intellect and emotion that defined his work.
The letter’s content, composed in German — the lingua franca of Central European intellectual circles of the time — discusses artistic views on models and new stylistic tendencies. Munkácsy notes that he hopes to elaborate on his opinions in person, implying correspondence with a fellow artist or patron, perhaps from his Parisian milieu.
Letters by Munkácsy are scarce; those including drawings or self-portraits are of exceptional rarity. This document stands as both a personal letter and an autonomous artwork — a vivid reflection of the artist’s inner world and creative temperament.
Translation of the German letter → English:
“Dear Sir, I was very pleased to see the progress shown by the works lying before me. They entitle me to hope for a good result, if the talent that is revealed in these studies is united with diligence and perseverance. In my opinion, it would now be necessary to work after nature, from living models. Otherwise, I hope to be able to communicate my views to you personally soon.
Until I can send you other work, please accept my faithful likeness.
In the meantime, I remain with sincere respect.”
